COLLE DELLE 100 BOTTIGLIE

Colle delle 100 Bottiglie was born out of passion in 2013 with the aspiration of restoring two historic crus of Lucchesia—Segale and La Maolina—to their past excellence. This was achieved by recovering ancient vineyards and developing new ones to enhance the territory. Additionally, from the care of our olive groves, we produce high-quality olive oil.

COLLE DELLE 100 BOTTIGLIE

We practise organic farming, maintaining manual labour for better care of old vines. The vineyards' ideal exposure is south and southwest at an altitude between 100 and 350 metres. With absolute respect for raw materials and seasonality, and with the declared intent of avoiding product standardisation, our winemaking process includes temperature-controlled fermentations without added yeasts. Ageing in steel and/or barrels is followed by bottle ageing.

The IGT wines include one white and two reds. Two varietal wines will be added—a Syrah and a white wine from the recovery of a nearly extinct local cultivar—along with a passito. In addition to wine, we produce extra virgin olive oil. We cold-press our olives on the same day of harvest at our in-house mill, ensuring total control over production and the absolute integrity of the raw material—essential qualities for obtaining superior-quality oil.

OUR STORY

A few years ago, when wine was just a passionate hobby, cuttings of old Segale vines were taken from two elderly and highly experienced farmer-vintners, Giuseppe and Guido Cozzoli. Segale is a locality in San Macario in Monte, on the northern hills of Lucca, famous for its wine. These cuttings were used to propagate and transplant vines in another area on the northeast hills of Lucca, also renowned for its excellent wines—La Maolina.

THE CANTICLE OF CREATURES

At a time when the most precious resource that shelters and sustains us is in danger due to human recklessness, committing to cultivating the land sustainably (organically), ensuring it continues to bear fruit, is above all an act of respect and gratitude.

By chance and by passion, we "adopted" three abandoned plots of our beautiful hills, tending to them so they could return to what they were until a few years ago—lands of vineyards, olive groves, and some fruit trees.

Thus, wine and oil were born, and more will follow, doing things in the best way, as they used to say, committing ourselves day after day, season after season, year after year.

The timing for those who work the land is dictated by nature’s short, long, and very long rhythms. Nature has trained us in patience, waiting, and, when necessary, the readiness to act immediately.

Our ambition is to one day hear people say that those once-abandoned lands now look almost like gardens.

It would be wonderful if each of us had the privilege of adopting a piece of land; we would have more beautiful landscapes, and perhaps, nature could be saved.

A passion that grew slowly, at first to save the small abandoned family vineyard, then, with opportunities and surprising opportunities seized on the fly, a hobby 5 years ago, leaving the old job in the family business became the new one. Sustained by the ambition to be worthy of his work, recovering and valorising abandoned land in two historical wine-growing cru of Lucca, he strives to produce quality wines and olive oil that are an expression of the territory and experiments with new ways that can enhance their hidden uniqueness.

This photo is a tribute. Guido together with his brother Giuseppe, with incredible wisdom and work, succeeded in giving nobility and fame to Rye wine. Unmistakable is the wrapping paper label of those bottles. The last descendants of the Cozzoli family who lived on the Rye hill for four centuries, with ingenious intuition for the times and meticulous work, they enhanced that slope until it became a cru', the most famous in the Lucchesia, producing a red wine with an unmistakable personality, highly appreciated even by the most demanding palates. For their precision, Guido and Giuseppe were nicknamed “the Swiss”. Theirs and their wine are a story to be told.

A lifelong farmer, Giampiero has lived and worked as a factor in one of Lucca's most prestigious wineries, Terre del Sillabo. His collaboration is invaluable because Giampiero possesses that ancient peasant knowledge, handed down from generation to generation as a result of hard work, care and observation of nature, which is almost always more valuable than knowledge learned through study alone. Gabriele is his son. Growing up and living in the fields, he inherited from his father the all-farmer need for living in the open air and for concrete, manual work. Passionate about mechanical means of transport since childhood, he ended up trespassing from tractors into the dream of car racing, which he was finally able to realise at an age when one usually hangs up the steering wheel, participating in a few races, astounding everyone with his great rallying skills.
